A Ukrainian Futurist artist, and one of the creators of Ukrainian modernism in the early 20th century.
A “Tatar–Zaporizhian Futurist,” he founded the Kherson publishing house Hylea (the name used by Herodotus for Ukraine). He derived his literary futurism — parody, inversions, and neologisms — from Ukrainian Baroque and Romanticism.
Futurists saw themselves as revolutionaries and often resorted to provocation — sometimes naïve, even amusing: they dressed extravagantly and painted their faces with typographic symbols and geometric shapes.
Although a Futurist, Burliuk did not consider it necessary to follow the Italian founders of the movement in everything. He painted not only the city but also the landscapes of his native Kherson and Kharkiv regions; he depicted Cossacks, including Mamai — as he was a descendant of a Cossack lineage and took great pride in it. His painting breathes vast, monumental spaces. The breath of the boundless steppe can be felt even in the titles of his works, such as: “The Moment of the Decomposition of Planes and Elements of Wind and Evening Introduced into a Seascape Depicted from Four Points of View.”
Planetary thinking and cosmopolitanism are paradoxically combined in Burliuk’s work with an emphasis on his Ukrainian origin — he even described the color palette of his works as “deeply national.”
Like most artists of the early 20th century, David Burliuk experimented with nearly all artistic directions: from the realism of the Peredvizhniki to Cubism, Impressionism, and Fauvism. However, he avoided pure abstraction, did not engage in Suprematist painting, and, unlike many of his contemporaries, did not develop clearly defined theoretical views on art. Among Burliuk’s published texts there are almost no self-commentaries, but there is an interesting description of one of his paintings:
“In 1915 I painted the picture ‘Sviatoslav.’ […] Orange, yellow-red, red, and blue tones burst like Niagaras from beneath my brush. When I draw, it seems to me that I am a savage rubbing one color against another to achieve a color effect. The effect of burning. The effect of sensuality, of one color arousing the characteristic features and qualities of another.”
